from what I've read, it usually has something to do with your key. Mine popped on when i put the spare key in the ignition. I've heard cleaning the key with rubbing alcohol will help? never tried it though

is this why about once a week i'll be driving my car and i will stop somewhere... get out to run in the store right quick come back out put the key in the ignition, turn the key forward to start it and bam the security light comes on and wont let me start the car for usually about five to ten minutes. i have to cycle the key back and forth until it goes off then i can start it... this is a VERY irritating problem espeacilly when its 105 outside and u want the A/C.. it's got me stumped!!

could this be a bad battery causing the security system to fault as a result of low voltage??

Most likely its a loose connection of one or both of your VATS wires attached to the key cylinder. Do the VATS bypass as illustrated in the link posted by Orion. It's very easy and inexpensive to do.

When the light is on solid all the time the system is in a Start Default, meaning it will start all the time. Normal system operation is Pass/Fail and will flash the security light if the Body Control Module (BCM) doesn't read the proper key resistence. When this happens the Security light usually stays on for a 3-4 minute cycle. After the light goes out the car should start. There is no gaurantee that the system will continue to do the 3-4min cycles though, as mine reverted back to Pass/Fail (after being in Start Default for years) and wouldn't start the car at all.
The VATS Bypass is the only sure fire CHEAP way to eliminate the problem.
