Restore Engine Treatment PROBLEM...
I`m posting this as a warning...
OK. Before I start this I know oil / engine treatments are mostly vodoo. I have, in the past, used the Restore engine treatment on a few older, high mileage sb chevy engines and seen pretty darn good results regarding oil consumption, power increase, and better fuel economy. That said..
Now for my nightmare. My `01 LS1 turned 64,000 miles. It was running perfectly, but I can never leave well enough alone, so I decided to throw a can of Restore in with my oil change. I tried 10w-40 Castrol full synthetic and also decided to try a Mobile-1 oil filter. (Prior to this oil change the oil pressure NEVER dropped below 40psi at idle, and cruising was always at 55-65psi. and 70-75psi at wot.) So I start the car and all is fine, 40psi. Then as I drove, and the temps came up, I noticed the oil pressure was staying at 40psi. So I slow to a stop and the pressure drops to 20psi and the gauge is fluttering at 20-25psi. So I proceed to accelerate slowly up to 3000rpm and 40psi is as high as it went. (Was afraid to go any higher). I kept a close eye on the pressure for 2 weeks, about 100 miles, and no change.
So out came the Castrol, the Restore, and in went 10w-30 Mobile 1 and a new Mobile 1 oil filter. Guess what... pressures are right back were they have always been. Don`t know if it was the oil, but my bet is that the Restore was the culprit. This is just a warning about my results with the use of RESTORE ENGINE TREATMENT IN AN LS1.

Weird. I used that product on my old LT1 and never had a problem. Ive never used it on my ls1's. Hmm you got me thinking there. Anyone else had a similar problem?

I was thinking it may be the pump configuration in the LS1? I know Restore is supposed to fill in scratches, etc., with the microscopic copper balls or something like that. Maybe just for cast iron blocks and not aluminum? A mystery to me!

Sarge seems to be the oil GURU here, but it would seem very odd to me, and also silly, that a car company would recommend an oil that would not be the best for their engine when operated within their original oem design. After all, GM foots the warranty bill for repairs so I doubt Mobile paid them enough to cover all of the warranty costs! That is why I will stick with Mobile 1. And also the results I got in the first post above.

GM recommends Mobil1 cuz Mobil1 pays them big bucks for marketing rights.....just like Ferrari now recommends Quaker State. Doesnt make it the best or even close...just means the oil comapnies paid the car manufacturer big bucks for the rights to have their lil sticker on your oil fill cap...that's all....if you think for one second Mobil1 is "great oil" cuz GM has a marketing agreement with them...go buy some Air Jordans and dunk from the free throw line......lemme know how that works out for you

Pennzoil Platinum 10-30 is returning the best UOA's right now.....Shaeffers 7000 10-30 is and has always been a great oil with excellent UOA's....I dont like RedLine for street use as they suck in the detergents department and are overpriced for what it is...Royal Purple....something has changed with them and we are seeing shearing to lower weights and really high metal wear recently...so I'm off RP until I see improvements...Mobil1 is as good as any of the other off the shelf oils like Castrol Syntec or Valvoline Synpower.....Castrol GTX conventional will perform very well with 3-5K oil change intervals......and is one of the better values out there....but I'll put Pennzoil Platinum up there at the top of the heap today.....

Make no mistake about it...if Mobil1 would return to the original formula and get back to returning great UOA's...I'd be recommended them for sure......but they aint so I aint. I'm not pissed or dont like Exxon Mobil products......they just dont provide top shelf results but ask top shelf prices.....not my issue...they should stop with the multi million dollar marketing and put that money into their products.....
