TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is a recently established new standard for gasoline performance. Four of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.

Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by EPA in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction.

Gasoline retailers must meet the high TOP TIER standards with all grades of gasoline to be approved by the automakers as providing TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline.

In addition, all gasoline outlets carrying the brand of the approved retailer must meet the TOP TIER standards.

My cars have always hated Conoco gas, like Shell and Sinclair much better. Of course the gas we get here may be from a completely different refinery than what people get a few states away.

Anything that uses BP gas is the best

I had a check engine light from BP so I can't trust it and as you can see they do not make the official list yet. I use shell in my area as most on the list are not close to me.

I use Chevron in everything I have. Its worked great!

I stay away from Shell because of the issue they had with too much sulfur content in their gas a couple years ago that fried a bunch of fuel pumps here in the southeast. They even set up a temporary web link at the time to expedite claims. Thought all gas was pretty much the same, just the additives were different?

See the first post from the website, it is all about the additives or lack of. I just try to find the brands that carry the symbol of TOP TIER now to avoid problems. Most of my problems seem to happen when I travel away from my area (south or north).
