rear end weirdness
recently had the rear end rebuilt on a 98 ta. went from 2.73 to 3.73. now it feels like the wheels are dragging, [locked up] when backing up.
any suggested items to look at?

I would suggest jacking up the rear axle and try turning the wheels by hand and see what happens.Maybe then(with jackstands) fire up the motor and spin the wheels up forward and back, checking for stiffness or binding.Maybe it just needs to break in some more.Lastly of course get with the guy who rebuilt it.

i was charged $1200 by the mechanic to remove the busted 3.42 gears and install new 3.73 gears & redo the seals and bearings. he had the car for 1 week. i have filed a complaint with he state as he violated numerous florida requirements for auto repair facilities. my only recourse in getting my car back after i got the bill, was, pay and complain or put up a bond in the amount of the entire bill, plus the amount the repair facility would charge for storage, for 60 days.
florida is not consumer friendly unless you have deep pockets.
its not likely i'd take the car back to them to review their work.

The week sounds kinda long but the price is not so bad. Especially if you needed a shaft replaced. The cost of Bearings and Gears plus labor is expensive. 1200 doesn't sound like to bad of a deal to me.

One thing you need to check is that your computer probably still thinks you have a 2.73 in it. Unless this is changed you can run into shift point problems and other issues. Your speedometer also should be off.?

i had a similar problem when backing up and making a slight turn in reverse. it was almost like the rearend was binding up. after spending about $1000 on troubleshooting found that the solution can in bottle of this specialty gear lube. if this sounds like your situation, hit me back and ill get you the name of the product.
