Radar Detector Mod
Does anyone know of a mod that can be done with a stored radar detector without it hanging off the windows and the wires hanging around into your cig lighter? what i was thinking of trying to do is have it stowed as low as possible on the pass side windshield and have it wired into the vehical power, but also have like a shift indicator like light mounted near the instrument panel to where when the radar detects, the light will come on. i don't like the look of coil wires hanging around even if it's just a phone charger so i figured this might be a better way to go about it and also cause it's a little different. let me know if this is just a stupid idea please.

not stupid at all... I have both my radar detector and jammer mounted side by side just under my rear view mirror so they are not in the way. The wires are run up into the head liner, over, and then down under the trim on the windshield pillar. I have an aftermarket radio, so I had a wire lead marked as a switched power that was not going to require me to splice into the car side of the harness. I spliced the radio side wire harness to tie in the power of the two devices and placed a fuse immediately after the splice. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask questions-and i'm sure someone here can tell you another good place to find an ignition switched power source. Another thought--before i thought about tieing them into the radio lead, i just ran a power wire from the auxilary power terminal under the hood to a switch and then to the devices, so that wires were still hidden and i turned them on and off with the switch. That would work too.

detector to detect; jammer to jam In reality, i have an escort 8500 that has worked very well. After I got a ticket in spite of having it, i looked for something passive that would help protect me if a cop was crafty and didn't leave his radar on continously and came across the rocky mountain radar jammer. Found it at a great price on ebay and decided to try it. I still am not convinced of its effectiveness (or uneffectiveness) so i leave it up there.

i don't thiink any of those jammers really work. might look into getting a cordless detector but i haven't heard anythiung good about them yet. a buddy of mine got a ticket once cause his either was a piece of crao or the baterries died. i'de rather go through the hassle with the wiring ad know that theres always power and it should always be working. anyone recommend a good radar detector.

I hardwired my Escort into the SS using the hardwire kit they sell and it has worked great. I have the detector (Which I just upgraded to the 9500i) right above the rearview just to the right of the mirror post. From outside the car you can't even see that it is there. What kind of detector do you have?

I had mine plugged into the cig lighter and if it was left on, it would slowly drain my battery. That sucked, plus, I also didn't like the look of it. I decided to pull the outer trim off that surrounds the instrument gauges. I ran the cord over, down and through to the fuse box where I used this little guy:

I plugged it into the stereo fuse, I believe. This way, the radar detector only gets power when the stereo does (when the car is turned on) and the cord is out of the way, created a nice clean look. I had never messed with the electronics of my car before, but this was ridiculously painless and only took me about an hour to do. I can take pics and post if requested.WS6DREW

In my old '78 Z28 I had one mounted in an acrylic box behind the grill. I had to cut one tooth out of the grill, but it was black anyway. This one had a plug for a remote speaker and I also ran a wire for a LED that went where the rear defogger would have been. Mine was mainly for hiding it. Cops aren't going to let you off with one of those and they're illegal when we went into Canada. THey did make stealth ones that hooked into engine lights, but they were alot of $. It worked very well until they started using 'instant on' ones like Lidar. I'd like to buy a jammer, but for the price, I want to be sure they work.

i believe the blinder M20 is considered to be quite effective, however the jammer from rocky mountain radar as mentioned above has been compared to having the same effectiveness as mounting a brick to your windshield, the same goes for any rocky mountain radar product, horrible detectors

Valentine. Remote mounted. Best rated out there but pricey. Sometimes you do get what you pay for though.
