Rack and Pinion WTF???
What's up this is my first post so be easy... I'm currently working on my 01 SS camaro pulling the rack and stupid pinion out. There's one bolt holding me back, it's the one on the drivers side it hits the oil pan. What should i do? And if it involves lifting the motor, can i use a floor jack?

Somebody else had this problem before but it doesn't show up on a search so I don't know what ended up happening. I can tell you I looked it up in the service manual and it makes no mention of this. Try jacking up the engine without doing anything else and see if it doesn't move enough to get the bolt out, I think that's all he had to do before.

got it out...
finally removed it today... had to remove the alternator, take out the driver side motor mount bolt and lift the engine about 4 to 5 inches... sucks, but when I reinstall the rack and pinion i'll be sure to put the mounting bolt upside down to make it easier, it should work just the same... Thanks for the help... Lvbroham1

Glad to hear it all worked out-but what's strange is in the service manual they picture it as just unbolting without any other disassembly. Seems some cars need the engine moved and some don't.

Well if you look at the manual it says (engine removed for clarity) well i guess they figure everytime we fix our car we take the motor out? LOL... But really they need to show how to fix stuff with everything in the car and everything out just to make it easier... Besides most fix-it's don't require removing major components (like the engine)...

i'm lazy. i cut the bolt in half and installed a new one in the correct direction. bottom up. granted, GM did it the other way in case the nut fell off. safety, but stupid.
