Is it making noise? I'd check the fluid level/check for any leaks. Noise on start up could also be a bad pulley.

Could be anything from a persistent low groan, to high pitch metal-to-metal sound.

Never hold the wheel at full lock for an extended period.

Mine went out last year and started to whine when you turned the wheel one direction. It was kind of a high pitched whine. I bought a new one and installed a cooler in-line with the return line. Works great now. Hope this helps.

sometimes pumps get air in the system and will make noise. sometimes the fluid is low and will make noise. sometimes a pully is bad. sometimes the bearings in the pump are bad. any of these will make a loud groaning or screeching sound. very annoying.

for 2 of them and labor it was $99. But they had to order the other two, so I'm hoping it isn't that high also.
