Oil Change Time!
Hey guys, i been reading around trying to get an idea...i have such bad ADD that i wanted to throw my computer out of my second story window lol..but anyways! I seen Sarge's posts bout Amsoil 0-30? I was wondering if this would be best to use..i have a stock 02 T/A. DD and i drive it...not super hard or nothing but i like to get on it a little. The climate is..colorado alt (if that matters) Um..temps range from 20-105. Was 103 other day now its 68 for high..so..best recommendation? Oh and i have 99k miles. Thanks in advance..i know this is a overasked question but hopefully you will forgive...=)
P.S.- Should i use some Lucas oil additive?

I would stick with a good quality 5W-30 Synthetic, such as Amsoil or Penzoil Platinum. No additives required. Also, don't skimp on the filter -- a Wix or Napa Gold (exact same filter) are both easy to find and are way better than most other parts store filters.

so 5w-30? ok. i was curious as my last tune up well the first one on this ls1 in particular..harder to start i assumed the oil was too thick..idk whati have in it..i know..bad..but im changing it again, and i know i have a k&n filter. But the weird start might be because like a foo i put bosch plugs. lol so much moneys..well! live and learn

You think that weight is good for my temperatures here? Hm..

whats wrong with correct weight 5w/30w mobil one, with factory ac delco filter .. thats what most corvette owners have been running for years, many with 100,000 miles, and most see some hard driving.. rkvette

i disagree lighter is better, damage is done on start ups.. nascar is trying even 0 weight oil,!! and not blowing up,but more power with the light oils..easy to push through oil pump, more power.. as far as performance , does anyone do a weekly performance of 900 plus horses ,at 9,000 plus rpm's for as much as 600 miles ,wide open !! most run near 200 water temps, at times they run really hot, like 240 to 260.. nascar tries to let only a little air in to front, to keep stock cars low ,and handle better.. looked at some tests in master engine builders, magazine/ highest horsepower - everybody runing light oils ! rkvette

top fuel dragsters run wide open for maybe 4/6 seconds and rebuild after each run ! i am sure they have a reason for this? but no body, in their right mind -would run 60 weight on the street..all nascar run light weight synthetic oils , and they run wide open for for 4/6 hours near 200 mph. all new daily drivers and hot performance cars ,run synthetic like 0w/20 weight or 5w/30 weight.. in fact if you run and odd oil /weights differant from manfacture may void watterny of your motor, also no additives are needed !! rkvette

5W-30 or 10W-30 will be fine, both thin to the same viscosity when up to temp. the lower number is the cold temp thickness, at 32F 5W30 will flow much better then the 10-30 cause it will be thinner. no special properties to performance
Also, the 0-30 weights oils have a broader operating temperature range since they can stand the cold better.
So, for colorado, in the summer 10-30 would be fine. look in the owners manual.

nahh you will be fine with 5-30 I run it in my 02WS6 all yea where temps reach from -40C/F to 30+C with no issues. As long as its a quality oil, you will be golden.

Right on...should i put some lucas stabilizer or nah?

nope. dun need it. Run it as is, it really doesn't do anything for a daily driver. Alot of that stuff is just add more of the same additives that the oil companies already put into the oil. Unless you really beat the crap out of it, I wouldn't worry about it.
