No lighting of shift indicator (A4) at night
Haven't posted in a while. Current ride is a triple black 1999 SS convertible A4, Slp Lid, Magnaflow catback, Yank 3600, tuned. Longtubes coming.
Shift indicator light is out. Is there a simple bulb change under the ash tray or something more complex.
Thanks,
Steve

KMdef9,
Thanks for the reply. LOL. When I drive at night I can't see the "PROD21" when driving with my A4.

Yes, there's a light bulb under the center console for the gear indicator..
You'll have to lift the indicator cover to get to it..

It is a simple thing to swap out the bulb. I have had my center console apart a couple of times (also A4) and for the life of me I cannot remember exactly how it is done. I am thinking that there are two (2) screws in the front of the compartment.

Thanks, guys. I can lift the ashtray out and see a couple of wires that I hope has a bulb attached to the end. I don't want to just tug on them and f it all up. I'll research taking the console apart a little more. There's no to need to shift this A4 while driving at night anyways.

The light socket probably twists into place. Try gently turning it counterclockwise (looking at it from underneath).

I'm going to say on 2000 and up since mine was an 01 the following:
I think if I can recall that the 2 wires for the lamp socket are black and orange..
The socket twists into the housing for the gear indicator.
The shifter will need to be in neutral position to work with, (SO set the E-brake), and lift the shift indicator mechanism.
This is adheared to the underside of the indicator lid (console top).
The socket will need turned to line up the (+) shaped tabs and then the socket can be pulled right out.
Install in the reverse from above.
The lamp is a very small push in type, most auto parts can look this lamp up and have it in stock..
Most will even print you up a schematic of how the parts go together.
I would not tug on the wires much as the wires for the neutral safety switch are in the same bundle harness,
you could unknowingly disconnect or even damage the socket or the switch by pulling too hard..
Then guess what!?? No start..lol
It is however just easier to simply remove the thifter knob so you can see what you're working with.
This is done by pulling the "U" shaped keeper from the groove in the neck of the shift knob by popping it out with a pick or a small flat head (regular) screw driver..
The pin then easily pushes back into place once the knob is back on the lever shaft.
Or you can just turn your head sideways..Last edited by Smittro; 02-05-2012 at 09:16 AM.
