Cut the hole !!! I dropped my tank, & will never want to do that again... You even have to pull the right coil spring out to drop the tank...

Cut the hole. Mind you 98's are steel tanks so you can follow the template as above. 99+ have plastic tanks and the fuel tanks sit farther back closer to the edge of the t-top storage bucket.

"Dropping the tank is the proper way"
If you have a trailer queen like old my luos then I wouldnt do it.
I just drilled 3 giant holes in my door for the window so whenever I get some metal and some sound insulation mats im gonna cut it up.
I would cut it if you rely on it often

Dropping it is really pretty simple.
Plus, with the tank down, you can clean it out.
Also, I figure if there was supposed to be a door there....GM would have put one there. I figure there is a reason there isn't one.
Slowass has never been on a trailer.

how many times you planning on doing the fuel pump? Should be a one time thing. I dropped my tank.....by myself. Time consuming but no harder than pulling a tranny by yourself or something like that. I can tell you how to make it easier to get back in. The 98's have a metal filler neck which is what makes it such a pain in the ass. Once you get it out trim that pass through hole the neck goes through back about an inch or so. Makes getting it back in there a piece of cake and if I ever do have to drop mine again it'll be way easier.

Another vote for not being lazy and doing it right, by the time you get the carpet pulled back, the hole cut, pump changed, edges cleaned and sealed to keep out RUST, and the cover plate put back in (see more holes for screws and more chances for RUST), you can have the tank out new pump in and back in, in the same time. Oh did I mention the possabilty of RUST.

Dropping mine was a bitch... Or, should I say, putting it back up sucked. I couldn't see all the lines ( plastic fuel lines ) & somehow kinked one. I paid a garage to drop it the second time to fix it... On the 98, the filler neck is one peice, with the tank... I thought about cutting it off, then add a rubber hose connector.

And obviously make sure you almost run your car on "E" unless you feel like weight lifting too.

ya thats a problem as well. i have it up for the winter so right now it has about 3/4 of tank. Should i just put the heads/cam and everything else in and drive it near empty then change it out? Ill probably drop the tank down and do it the right way. ill have my brother to help me so maybe it should be easier. I just read the manual and i was like holy shit thats alot of work for fuel pump. Does anyone know if i really have to drop the exhaust out? bc if i do ill wait to do the headers till after the fuel pump.

the tank is above the exhaust so yes, you have to take the exhaust off. At least the rear section of it that's behind the axle. If you don't have a problem cutting on the car go ahead and do it that way. Thousands of people do it via the trap door method. Just not my thing. I try to do stuff the right way when I can.

^^^Exactly, and they always seem to wait til you fill them up to go out, so now you have a tank full of fuel to deal with.
