    The Mysterious LS1 tapping solved!!!!!!

Great news!!! I may have found a major reason why most of our higher milage LS1's are suffering from a tapping noise!!!! As I posted earlier there are many reasons why our LS1's are tapping,
    1. Exaust leak
    2. Piston Slap (NORMAL ON LS1'S)
    3. EGR Tube leak
    4. Lifter
    5. Pushrod
    6. Valve
    7. Motor going out
But I may have uncovered the real reason for alot of us!!!! I recently added a dry shot of NOS to my LS1 and I wanted to run a little better than 125 shot, I used to be a youngen and didnt ever think about the weekest link, This time I wanted to do it right though so I first wanted to beef up my ignition. I ordered a set of MSD Multi-Spark coils for it along with a big fuel pump and 60lb/hr injectors to avoid a lean condition. I have yet to finish installing the whole thing yet but I did manage to get the coils on. (THEY LOOK SWEET but are a bitch to install) I wanted to see if there was any major difference in just the coils so I ran it through a couple of power pulls and didnt notice much except for a smoother idle and faster top-end. A few days later though it hit me..... The tapping noise had vanished!!!! I wanted to make sure it was changing the coils that did it so I took back off the #1 coil and started switching out the stock ones in its place, suddenly I came across the #3 coil and the tapping was back, I changed the coil back to the MSD and the tapping was gone again.
I just wanted to share this info with everyone because I know how damn annoying that tap was. I will be reposting this as a new post so its sure to be vied by many as possible.
Anyways to all..... Glad I could be of some help.

I would first try buying a NEW factory coil and swapping that out till you find the bad coil or coils if that is your problem. The MSD units arent cheap... $67.00 a piece from Summit Racing, X's 8= $536.00 for the whole set. Like I said... Unless you want to upgrade to these multi-spark units anyways, I would first buy a brand new factory unit to test for the bad one first. The MSD part number for the coils are... (8245) From summit racing the direct part number is (MSD-8245)
PS. Hey Sarge... I believe the sound sounds more like an arc but I checked the engine compartment at night ans saw no sights of lightning in the engine bay. Maybe its arcing inside the coil itself??

I hope you know this or I hope you read this before you go to the auto parts store and ask for a cap and rotor for your LS1. Ls1's dont have acap/rotor. They use direct coil per plug ignition. No distributer, cap, or rotor.
Not makin fun, just trying to help.

ehhh...i'm gonna wait to see if msd ever makes a ignition box for those coils...or do the coils multi-spark on their own?

The coils are already Muti-Spark, MSD has been designing for years now an ignition box to work with the factory PCM but they have been unsuccefull at making one that doesnt make the computer go haywire. So instead they came up with a pricy alternative. Multi-Spark Coils!!!! Now these coils do have a plug-in for the factory wiring but they also have a 2-pin plug as well that rumor has it that they now have an ignition controller box in the works to plug into those coils, I am not sure if this will be for LS1's or if it will be for a Multi-Coil pack distributorless retrofit ignition system for carb vehicles other than the LS1.

I've been a big fan of MSD stuff ever since it came out. I used to have a MSD 6C on my Challenger (old guy, eh?)
