wuts up guys. was wondering if anyone had any idea about the smog tests in california. im planning to move out there in sept and im not sure of what to expect. i know they're laws are stricter than illinois but im not 100% sure of how they are.
was wondering if anyone lived out there that can give me a little insight on what to expect. or maybe there's a way to leave the car registered out here and not have to take the test anymore??
any infor will be very helpful.......thanks guys!!

A test is like $50. I'm not sure exactly what's checked, though I might have the papers around. If you fail, you'll have to pay whatever it takes to fix the underlying problem. Financial assistance might be available in some cases. You need a smog certificate to be registered for the first time. I think how often the car must be tested is based on the car, but there could also be a lottery system. I've needed a smog test about every two years. If you spend most of your time in California, you'll need Cali registration, unless you are in the military or something.

Black/Black/Black- 2000 Camaro SS Vert #5301
Do they still have the roadside random tests? I know they did that in the '70s. I got nailed my first week there, fortunately I passed.

I'll have to look inside the car. I realized I probably don't, because I had to hand something over for the DMV. If you're going to drive all the way from Illinois, I recommend you get the car checked out and fixed up before you go.
Also, I've never heard of any random roadside inspections.

You're in luck. I do have a copy.
Here are the items checked. For my car, a few are listed as N/A; it probably would be the same for yours.
PCV
Catalytic Converter
EGR Visual
EGR Functional
Fuel Cap Functional
Fuel Cap Visual
Spark Controls
Fuel Evaporative Controls Functional
Thermostatic Air Cleaner
Air Injection
Vacuum Lines to Sensors/Switches
Ignition Timing
Wiring to Sensors
Fillpipe Restrictor
Fuel Evaporative Controls
MIL/Check Engine Light
Carb./Fuel Injection
Other Emission Related Components
Oxygen Sensor
Liquid Fuel Leaks
I'm not sure how my car passed that last one.
Anyway, show the list to a mechanic, and a competent one should know what to do.

Where in Ca are you going? Yah your screwed unless your willing to de mod it every 2 years.

Aha. That explains the apparent plethora of muscle cars being used for street racing and sold cheap, e.g., they probably can't be registered and insured due to smog restrictions. In fact, under CA law, registration of a used car seems to require the seller's registration, so I wouldn't want any part of that.
Yeah, location matters. If you're moving near here and mods are the problem, you might as well sell in Illinois and get a deal after relocation.Last edited by clovenhooves; 07-21-2009 at 12:55 PM.
