    maintenance Rear Axle

    hi,

i have a question, mine 2001 3.8V6 Camaro (manual) has only run 36.000 km (European version), 22.500 miles.
When do i need to change the rear axle fluid ?
I can't find anything in my books.

given the age of the vehicle a fluid change would not be a bad thing. Service intervals are designed with average usage in mind. On such low mileage cars the passing of time can have an affect on the quality of the fluids.

On V8 equipped cars I know that all have limited slip differentials. I am not certain if this is true of V6 equipped models. Check your owners manual, if you have it, and check for the capacity, weight and type fluid required by your axle. You may also require GM limited slip additive. Also, in order to complete the job properly a new rear cover gasket will be necessary.

I'm sure other members will chime in on the proper specifications for your vehicle. In fact I have heard of members using heavier weight gear oils in order to provide better operation and quieting of their differentials, this can be useful on worn units but is likely not necessary on one in good working condition.

    Best of luck,

If you do not have RPO code G80 (limited slip), you can safely use 75W/90 synthetic with or without the addiitive, if you have the limited slip, I would use dyno oil with the additive. I have a V8 2001 Camaro with a gear change, I run 85W/140 dyno oil with the additive, the thicker oil disapates the heat faster, and keeps things quiet.

You should change the rearend fluid every 50K.
