The screen is there for a reason.
The MAF has sensors that meter the air coming in. They are designed to meter the air with the screen in place.

okay but what about the question i asked??

Well removing the screen will most likely skew the MAF tables a bit. It's calibrated as Mr. Luos said to work with the screen in place.
It is common practice to remove the screen with alot of the custom tuners but this requires a recalibration of the MAF tables for it to work properly and keep your A/F ratio in check.

Sure it can kill some of your gas mileage--It is more of a stream staightener rather than a screen--It will skew the calibrations of your AFR.More critical on an automatic -- the trans uses a MAF signal to sense load and that info can make the trans shift at improper times. Also the comp picks the wrong timing table becaus of the false info..It affects so many things if not callibrated correctly---Put it back on--The HP gains are so minimal and a stock screened MAF is good for 500 HP---On a M6 the some of the same issues arise but not as severe

I didn't notice one bit of difference without it. I don't think it really makes a difference on a stock motor.

I just put a lid on my car and the screen had pebbles and some trash on it, so it will never be coming off. That stuff in the engine is a big NO NO.

Yes the meter is out of calibration now.
If you do a search you'll find multiple posts were we discussed this in great detail!!
If you look at at your LTFT now they will be trying to compensate for your maf.
This is why we don't do this mod. It takes way too long to reprogram the correct parameteres for the minimal gain.
Yes the screen is placed there for more than catching objects as others have stated.
Don't be afraid of the bottle!!! Be afraid of your tune!!!

Sebring Silver- 2000 CamaroSS
Unless they have changed from 2000 to 2002.....I don't think they can go back in.....Mine broke apart when I removed it
Went and put a new MAF in when it started throwing codes

when i bought mine it had no screen(3yrs ago), Never once has it thrown a code or anything,

It probably will never throw a code per say,,,but the extra airflow that is introduced by removing the screen causes the MAF tables to not be accurate. The car will most likely run and drive as it did before.
Most tuners consider this a free mod,,,and it is,,,but for it to be affective at all, a custom tune is needed. The MAF tables need to be adjusted to compensate. I have talked to a couple of tuners who both recommend removing the screen even on stock motors, BUT,,,this also comes along with a custom tune and MAF tables that have been adjusted accordingly.
None of them actually recommend just removing the screen and leaving it at that. Larry.

Yes it won't throw codes it just makes your maf unacurate. Like I said if you were to put a scan tool on it you would see the long term fuel trims going crazy now trying to compensate.
Good description on your post Larry!
I'm NOT going to go into massive detail cause we have debated this multiple times already........
I would rather pay a tuner labor time to do other mods than re doing a maf tables to gain 2-4 horsepower!!!

I have the predator prog. can that tune compensate, or do i need to goto a shop with ls1edit or efi live?
