    LS1 question

Just out of pure curiosity, can the LSx engines be set up to run mechanically and with a carburetor, without the PCM?

Absolutely. As a matter of fact, it's become popular to do so, and on the dyno they are making slightly more power.

You still need a controller to run the ignition system, crank and cam sensor etc...though. MSD makes a simple plug and play setup for that with plug in pills for different timing curves. It really doesn't get any easier.

Nope, the aftermarket stepped up to the plate. Edelbrock makes various intakes as well as Wilson and others. Pick the carb you want and go. Makes the fuel system cheaper and easier to fab in a retro swap too. There are now dual quad tunnel rams for the LS too I've been waiting for someone to finally make a tunnel ram for these, and it's finally here.

The iginition controller as I mentioned made by MSD, I believe Edelbrock sells one too, FAST has one, and I"m sure there are others to price shop from.

I remember HP TV did a carb swap on a LSx motor using Dual Holley Carb's, Edelbrock Intake, and MSD ignition, can't remember the CAM or heads but it put out slightly over 500HP on their engine dyno.

So Like FBJ said if/when I get to work on a classic car I'll look at doing one of these set ups. I would love to drop one into a 2nd Gen TA, Camaro, or a Stingray Vette.
