    LS1, LS2, LS6 and LS7

I'm an LT1 Impala SS guy. I know the LS6 is a 6 liter and the new LS7 is the 7 liter, but what's the deal with the LS1 and LS2? What's the displacement of all the engines and can you guys interchange parts? I have seen numerous LS swaps and am just not familiar with what all the different designations are about.

    Thanks

    LS6 - 346 (5.7)
    LS1 - 346 (5.7)
    LS2 - 364 (6.0)
    LS7 - 427 (7.0)

They are mostly interchangable. But not 100%.
Bore changes from the LS1 to the LS2 to the LS7 making the blocks a touch different as well as the internals.
Sensors have moved on the LS2 over the LS1/LS6 as well.
The LS7 looks similiar, but has several changes over the other LSx motors.

    O.K.
So the LS1 started in the F-bodies in 97 or 98? When did they start in the Vette?
    I wonder why the LS6 is a 5.7 instead of a 6 liter? I thought the 6 meant 6 liter???
Which came first, the LS2 or the LS6? And did the f-body leave with the LS6 or the LS2??
When did the Vette's get the 6 liter?

The LS7 is definetely an awesome engine. Does anyone know what GM is selling this crate motor for? $$$$$$

Thanks alot guys! I'm just trying to get this all in order. I've been out of the loop for longer than I thought!

LS1 started in Fbodys in 98. Started in Corvettes in 97.

6 doesn't mean litres. Otherwise the LS1 would be 1 litre and the LS2 would be 2 litres.

The LS6 came before the LS2, found in C5 Z06 Corvettes.

Vettes got the 6 litre LS2 in 05 when the C6's came out.

I think an LS7 crate engine costs somewhere between 15-20k.

The LS1 started in 98 for the F-bodys.
    F-bodys never had the LS2 or LS6.
I believe the LS6 came first.

I believe they are selling the LS7 for around 15k-20k.

HAHA cascade got to this before me! his sounds right

Also, all LS7s are handmade... There's only like, 15k made a year, or something.

And all the LS-series engines are based upon the LS1 architecture, with modifications stemming from that...

I can't wait to see what happens with the LS9 and LS8. And the 08 GTO is getting the LS3 with a rumor of a slightly smaller motor, the L76.
    LS9 - superchagered, intercooled 6.3L smallblock, ~650+ hp
    LS8 - supercharged 6.3L smallblock, ~500+hp
    LS3 - N/A 6.2L smallblock, ~430-450hp

LS1 came in the vettes in 97 and f-bodies in 98
LS6 came first in the C5 Z06 vettes
    LS2 in C6 vettes and 05-06 GTO
    LS7 crate for $15K

You can get a crate LS7 for $12,300 as I've been looking at them. Depending upon who you know and if they happen to have GM connections, the price may be a bit cheaper...

Didnt some of the last models of the F-bodys have LS6 blocks?? I wanna say I 've seen people talking about this. Something about GM running out of LS1 blocks and having to use the LS6 setup.

I've read this too and the way to find out is a number at the back of the block. Also with that information was the disclaimer that having the LS6 block adds no power or strength.

but it does provide better windows and easier circulation of oil to critical parts which equals less chance for start up wear..and i do believe the ls6 blocks can handle a lil more output then the ls1 blocks but very little.
