Do you remember what GM said when asked what a Camaro was?
“When asked, Chevrolet sales executives claimed a Camaro was: "a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs".”

Bright Red- 1999 Trans Am Ws6
With very few exceptions, since the beginning, GM has always used "L" as the first letter of the RPO code for all their engines. Whether it be the LT or LS or L## like a L84. What I can't figure out is why, LS1, LS2, LS3, LS4, LS6, LS7, LS9, LSX(X = 10 in roman numerals). They skipped five and eight! LS9 is going to be a 700hp supercharged engine for the 09 zr1 vette.

Navy Blue Metallic- `98 Formula M6 HdTp
Some of the recent engine RPO's are not new.
LT-1 was the RPO for the High output 350 SB available in the `70-71 Corvette and Camaro. Obviously the Gen II SB was called LT1
LS1 was originally the RPO for the 1970 Ram Air IV SD engine which was only slated to be available in the then new `70 Formula and Trans Am. The engine was never built (they used production GTO R/A IV's) but the RPO remained for the `70 T/A only. 88 of these cars were built.
LS2 was originally the RPO for the `73-74 SD 455 Engines available in Formula's and Trans Am's
LS5 was used by Pontiac as the RPO for the `71-72 455 HO Engine
And was also the RPO for the base 454 available in the `70 Chevelle
LS6 was the RPO for the High Output 454 used in the `70 ChevelleCraig
