    Low Voltage

I started my car this morning and the voltage gauge was laying right on the edge of the red. After I drove for about 20 minutes the meter went up to the halfway mark then it dropped back down to halfway between 13 and the red. My first thought was my alternator is going bad. My Optima battery is about 2 years old in it. Any thoughts?

I would first check to make sure that all your wiring is connected securely; at the battery and alternator. Make sure all the connections are clean and free of corrosion build up.

If that all checks OK, I would have both the battery checked and the alternator.

If you charge your battery with a charger and in a few days the battery is dead again, you either have a faulty cell in the battery or you have something draining the battery; bad fuse, power usage, etc.

Mine did the exact same thing last year before the alternator completely went out. A new alternator fixed my car.

check the battery terminals for corrosion... also check to make sure you're not leaking power steering fluid on the alternator (our cars are imfamous for that)... i've got bad batches of new alternators before...

the power steering pump is located right above the alternator... the seal around the reservouir is notorious for leaking and dripping on the alternator...

ok thanks checked it seal is good and nothing is on the alternator. Its like the pcm isnt sending a signal to the alternator. What will cause this its a brand new pcm. And what should the volts read between the pcm to the alternator ?

Did you go with a re-manufactured one? If so, I hope you got a lifetime warranty with it.

ok I have fixed the PCM and the alternator. The red wire that goes to the alternator was actually broke inside the wire. Everyone who is having this problem check that damn red wire extremly well before taking it to the shop! Its about 30 dollar to fix. Thanks for all the help guys.
