    Lost reverse

Out tonight, running fine, go to back out of parking spot can't get it in reverse. I mean like the lock out is engage and it will not go into reverse gear at all. With or without clutch, engine on or off.

Also I have no problems shifting into any of the other gears.

    Help?!?!?

Is there a switch or sensor that effects this?

Almost certain there is, but I don't know the name of it off-hand. Subscribed.

I believe it's a reverse lockout solenoid for the T56

Have you tried to shift it into reverse using a lot of force yet or no? If it's the reverse lockout solenoid which is failing, you still should be able to shift into reverse, you just have to overcome a spring force, which is pretty stout from what I'm reading.

Yeah I tried couldn't do it. Felt like if I pushed hard enough something would break so I didn't go any further. Ended up pushing the car out of the spot. Not easy when you're crippled. I've looked up what you said it might be, according to All Data DIY you got it right in the name.

I can't seem to find online at the auto parts places, so I'll call in the morning.

I'm pretty sure that even reverse in the T56 also has synchro keys. I'd find it hard to believe those would get damaged though as you're never really ever shifting it into reverse hard.

Check out what Alex said too! Seems like I've heard of that or read about it on here before as well.

pull the fuse out and look at it from the side. If the small filament inside looks burnt or broken its probably a blown fuse. Switch it with something less important and see if your problem goes away

I should have clarified my post 8, what I meant was if they are the gray color fuses you can't really tell if they are broke.

Alex, I'll try it when I get home.

seems like it is a dealer controlled part. waiting on gmpartsdirect to respond to my email, but the local dealer wants $100 for it. That is just wrong!!!

Rockauto doesn't seem to carry either.

That number might just be for the housing. It might lead you to the sensor number though - assuming your sensor is bad.

I couldn't put mine in reverse after we installed the new clutch. I read on here somewhere about the solenoid. So i kind of banged on it a few times, and now i can put it in reverse, but barely. Waiting on my budget to allow a full rebuild of my tranny. Engine first at the moment.

You can overpower the solenoid and get the car into reverse. It's not going to break. It's just a plunger with a really heavy springs with an actuator. When you force it over you're just compressing the heavy spring. I had a similar problem but it was very intermittent. One day I day I got a SES light for the vehicle speed sensor but my speedo was working fine. I replace the $20 sensor and now I have no issues getting into reverse. The skip shift solenoid will only let you put the car in reverse if you're traveling below 15mph. If the speed sensor is reading inaccurately the solenoid will not open and let you get into reverse.

Ok, I did this and I also kinda forced it into the reverse gear. Fuse was ok so I reinserted it. Not sure which one helped but I'm able to get back into reverse. F'ing gremlins having fun with me?!?

    I'm confused

The solenoid may be starting to go or it may be just a hiccup

Just something I'll have to pay attention to.

If its hard to get in reverse the solenoid isn't working. go under the car and tap on the solenoid with a wrench or something similar and try reverse again, skip shift and reverse solenoid are down there so make sure you tap the right one. I would still replace the fuse if out looks ok, it can cause this issue and is cheap to replace. Could even be a bad connection there.

ok, it's not tough to get in now, it feels the same as before.

I'm thinking it could be that it got stuck, there was some construction on the road I was on and hit a very rough patch. I think forcing in might have pushed it loose or the fuse did it.

It's either above or the damn cats in my neighborhood are f'ing with me.
