There should of been a hose that came with the lid, it comes out of the lid and connects to it. I think it's an air pump, it's kinda like a vacum that pulls air in the lid.

Most aftermarket lids don't come with the hole in the side and people just buy a cheap breather filter for the hose. The hose connects to the air pump which sucks in air for a few minutes on cold starts. My advice is go to auto zone and get an expansion plug or something for the lid to seal it, and a breather filter for the end of the hose. Then position the hose so you can zip tie it somewhere out of the way - just be careful not to kink it restricting air flow because it'll throw a secondary air code.

hate to hijack--but all the info above keeps me from repeating... I have an aftermarket lid; don't know what brand, but doesn't have the hole in the side. I also see that the tube in question has a breather on it and is filthy and have thrown AIR codes twice now, that eventually cleared off, and the AIR pump occasionally whines really loud when it is on. Is the dirty filter the likely culprit--can i just clean it (how?) or buy a new one? Sorry...dumb questions but i didn't install it so i don't know what's involved.

If it's extremely dirty I guess it could be restricting air flow making the pump work harder, but could be something else. When I got mine I ordered a K&N breather filter at the same time which can be cleaned, but has been on the car for years and never have. Here's what mine looks like for both you guys: http://kandn.com/images/m/62-1030.jpg Don't need this one, cheaper at the parts store, just for illustration.

go ahead and plug that hole up with black tape..or any thing thatll fit in it..judging from the pictures..it doesnt seem as if the hose will fit in there...the hose is just for the air system..which gets fresh air and throws it to the headers to create less emmissions i think...but go to your local auto parts store and pick up a mini cone filter in the mean while...later on ...you can remove all that air shit and get the codes cleared

You have the exact same lid as I have.
If you'd like, I can take a pic of how the hose is supposed to attach.
You could probably get a plastic nipple and length of hose for about the same price as the filter.
Either way, the solution to your problem will cost very little.
Oh yeah, DON'T drive the car with that hole in the side of the lid unplugged!
That hole is after the filter so it'll suck dirty air into the engine
Plug it before you drive it!

since your car is a 2002, if you ordered it new it would have came with the hose. on my 99 it just came with the plug for the hole. took me a while to figure out why the 00-02 cost a little more

See the hose off to the side of the lid below?
Who ever sold ya the lid, didn't include the hose.

all you need to fix it is to goto your local parts store and pick up a 90 deg, plastic elbow, then just push out the rubber plug from your lid and your hose should reconnect like factory.
