Post "Impressed! That’s why I’m switching to Amsoil"

Here is an LS1 guy who is very happy with Amsoil SSO 0W-30 in his engine:

Bob is the Oil Guy.com user: - ProStreetCamaro -

“I'll tell ya this SSO is the first oil I have ever used in my LS1 that has completely eliminated the piston slap in my engine. To me that means less wear obviously and in order to eliminate piston slap it has got to be clinging to the metal parts which would mean even further wear reduction on startup. Maybe I am off base there but it’s the only logical explanation I can come up with. I am so impressed that’s why I’m switching everything to Amsoil.”

i run 10w-30 in the summer and 5w-30 in the winter.....so 0w-30 would be better to use during all seasons in general?

Post 0W-30 Thinner, no. Less thick at start-up, Yes.

This is where it comes in handy to look at the Physical Properties Data.

    Physical Properties Data:

    Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445)

Not to worry. Although the above term looks like engineering jargon, you really don’t need a PhD to decipher it.

Kinematic Viscosity tells us what the viscosity is going to be at a given temperature while the substance measured is in movement or flowing. In our case, its motor oil.

    100 degree C = 212 degree F.

212 degrees F is the design operating OIL temperature of passenger cars (Not to be misconstrued with operating coolant temperature).

    Amsoil 10W-30 #ATM – Viscosity at design operating temp = 10.7

    Amsoil 5W-30 #ASL – Viscosity at design operating temp = 10.7

    Amsoil 0W-30 #SSO – Viscosity at design operating temp = 10.3

All motor oil that has the SAE grade 30 or multi-grade something W-30 has to have a viscosity within the SAE specification of 9.3 to 12.49 at the design operating temperature of 212 F. All the above oils fall within this specification so they all have a SAE grade 30 designation.

    Moving on…

    Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D-445)

    40 degree C = 104 degree F

Same oils at 104 degree F:

    Amsoil 10W-30 #ATM – Viscosity at 104 degree F = 62

    Amsoil 5W-30 #ASL – Viscosity at 104 degree F = 59

    Amsoil 0W-30 #SSO – Viscosity at 104 degree F = 56

As you can see, these oils actually thicken as they cool. This is true of all motor oil.

Example: You are out driving your car and it’s up to the oil operating temp of 212 F, or a viscosity of around 10. You make it to your destination and shut of your engine. The oil begins to thicken as it cools. After a while the oil has cooled to 104 F and you can see with the numbers above what the thickness/viscosity of the three oils are going to be. 62, 59 and 56. Although the spec is not given for the oil at cooler temperatures, you can see the trend. Motor oil thickens as it cools. You can only imagine what the viscosity would be when the oil cooled to 75 F, or 32 F or 0 F; Thicker even yet.

So your aim should be to find the motor oil that has the least amount of change in viscosity from the design viscosity of 10 at 212 F to whatever the viscosity will be when it cools. You want the oil to get to the design viscosity as soon as possible because this is where it protects your engine best. This is one reason why 90% of engine wear occurs at start-up. The motor oil does not circulate well when it is cold and has a viscosity of more than 60+. By the three Amsoil examples above you can see that the 0W-30 thickens the least in comparison when compared to the other SAE 30 grade oils. This is why 0W-30 is the more attractive choice no matter what the ambient temperature is. It has better cold flow properties.

0W-30 Thinner, No! Less thick at start-up, Yes!

I'd like to try it, but it's way more expensive than anything else I've used...well, I've got 2,530 miles to debate on keeping what I've got, or spending 20 bucks more per oil change for Amsoil 0w-30....or direct me to where it's cheaper than $10 a quart

Become a PC and the price drops significantly. Cost like $10 bucks. Hell you save that the first oil change.

How significantly? I go through an oil change a month, so becoming a PC may well be worth it....Preston and I took my valve covers off, and it looks like a barbeque in there...the former owner used I think Castrol 10w-30 (idiots). I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance now, it seems to hold up pretty well, but I'm no expert lubricator.

    Here is retail

    Here is my PC cost.

What is that like 20% =/-? And that discount is on everything Amsoil sells across the board. Filters everything. PM or post a question thread to CompSyn here on the board....he will hook you up PC or not.

That's only a dollar more a quart than the Extended Performance...may be looking for a change... do you have links to any lab tests, etc. comparing to Mobil 1 and others? Does Amsoil sell filters as well?

Shit man...Google Amsoil versus Mobil1 and put your reading glasses on. Yeah I use all Amsoil air and oil filters on everything I have.

I do in the wife's Mercedes. The European 5-40 is great fricking oil man.... Lemme see....I have Amsoil 10-30 in my daughters G6 right now with another 5 quarts ready to go here in a couple of weeks. I use their rear end lube in the GTO.

ah, come on. I'm way too lazy for that lol. Will do, I'm sure I already know the result based on what you use.

I am running Shaeffers 10-30 Series 7000 in the GTO right now. You know me I cannot stop "testing"......bottom line and I have said this a shitload....
Best over the counter/available anywhere is Pennzoil Platinum 10-30 hands down right now.
Best "Top Shelf" is Amsoil hands down.
Great middle of the pack is Shaeffers Synthetic Blends.
    Just my humble opinion.
