How many miles should you get on a set of brakes?
I was just wondering what the standard is for brake pads? I had a total brake job two years ago (less than 20,000 miles on them now) and they're chirping. Is this normal? I don't think the pads were installed right because I had to go back a month after they were put on and have them fix the back brakes because they wouldn't stop squeaking. What should I do?

That is a VERY SUBJECTIVE question IMO. It obviously is decided by how you drive your vehicle. If you drive it really hard and make abrupt hard stops often, such as on Meet the Fockers, then yes, they will not last long at all.
If you drive normal, then I would guess anywhere from 30,000 to 40,000 miles.

I dont think this is true with our cars but with some of the newer GM cars you do have to replace pads that often. My moms 07 Cadillac STS started squeking at 17,000 so she took it back to the dealer and they told her the brakes on that car were poorly designed and about every 20-30,000 shell need new brakes. My old Dodge truck and my pops Suburban both got over 100,000 miles before having pads replaced.

If you are a manual you will go through a little faster if you don't downshift.

82,000 on my OE front pads. 95% worn out tho, and I replaced my worn out rear pads around 63k. I will for sure buy high quality made in USA ceramic front pads soon.

I don't think I would change it...
While I love driving the manual, I equally enjoy driving a properly stalled automatic.
As for the brake pads. I expect 35-40K out of mine on average.
This doesn't make any consideration for driving style, if the last change was done without at least turning the rotors, etc...

They were supposed to have replaced everything (to the tune of $500) its only had 16,219 miles of light city/mainly hwy driving since then. I'm not rough on the brakes and I'm the only driver so I think the brake shop has some explaining or replacing to do. What would you do?

I would go back and bitch.
Although, I probably wouldn't let them touch my car again.

just curious, is the noise like a chirp chirp chirp while you're driving with your foot off of the brake, or is it a chirp when you apply pressure to the brake pedal? the former would most likely be the wear indicator chirping against the rotor, meaning replacement time. the latter could just be dirt or grit embedded in the pad, or glazed pads from overheating [but you did say you dont drive it that hard].
