    Help with my friends Camaro..

My friend has a 1989 Camaro, auto, V8 355 I think. Anyways when he bought it the person he bought it from said they couldn't get the part for the stock temperature control to turn the fans on so they wired up a fan switch. He's been having problems with it since then. His dad just re-wired it the switch and its still blowing fuses and so on. I made the suggestion of why they (him and his dad) don't just put it back to stock.... So here I am posting this to help them. Whats the part we need to get exactly so that the fans turn on correctly at stock configuration and/or a legit fan switch kit as they just have regular wire and a general toggle switch hooked up now. Thanks for any input.

Run the wire seperate from the fuse box, i recently wired one up for a buddy, i used 14 guage wire, ran it directly to the battery, from the switch, then one to the power side of the fan. Left the harness connected to the fan and just tied into the hot side of it.

which fuse is it blowing? Is the wire arching somewhere?
Or you can hook it up the way its suppose to be, and check the relay and the coolant temp switch and see which one is causing the issue.

Does it still have the factory fuel injection?

Just called him. Apparently the fuse that is blowing is NOT in the fuse box and they wired up a "fuse" near the battery in with the wire...could that be the deal? I going to probably go over to his place later to check it out personally. He also says that now no matter what position (on/off) the fans are running if they turn on the car, and it blows the fuse eventually so.. yeah.

Yeah I believe so as they haven't modified it.

Well if there running in either postion means the wire they ran is shorting out somewhere. They either used too small of a guage of wire or to small of a fuse. I would first disconnect the wiring they ran from the battery or power source then trace it and find where its shorting out at. Then i would go from there.

I had an 86 with a similair setup, and it kept doing the same thing. What amperage is the switch? I had to go to a 50 amp toggle, and that would blow every few months anyway, but that was the only way to work it. I had a pro stock car builder (my mechanic) set it up, and he used heavy gauge wires, ran it from the fuse box, the battery, and the only problem was replacing the switch every so often for around 9 dollars a whack.

The computer controls the fan on/off. If he wants to go back to stock then check the relay and the temp sensor on the pass side of the block. Check the gauge of the wire. Also if there is no relay the fans are having a large draw on the switch, probably too much. I would put a relay in to take the current out of the switch. When I bought an 88 Iroc someone did the same hacking on it. My mechanic had to trace the wire from the relay to the computer and rehook it.

On my old Cutlass, I used this kit from Painless Wiring. It turned the fan on and off automatically.
