Heard this site is very hepful..new guy.
My name is John, i bought a 98 firebird not too long ago and the next day it ended up breaking down on the road. Had to get it towed back home. I took it to firestone and the said blown head gasket and bad rings. Soo much disappointment.. Bought the car for $3000 and the engine felt tough but guess not. I am now deciding weather to rebuild the engine or sell her to a guy i know for a grand and buy another bird or mustang. Any help?? its a real tough bind.

There is this place called Thunder Bolt. they said exactly $2000 for a rebuilt engine with a 100,000 mile warranty. BUT, the car will need about maybe another $2500 to fix up some body work. I'll admit it and say ima dumbass for rushing into this.

man, hate to hear that. By the time it's all said and done you'll have enough money into it that you could've bought an LS1 car. I'll tell you my feelings on the v6's and it's just my personal opinion so take it as much. When buying an f-body you buy it for the power first and foremost. When you buy the 6 cylinder version you're getting 75% of the engine and 100% of the headaches that comes with an f-body. I would get out of it and look for an LS1 version if it were me.

Hmmm...used low mileage 3800 should work. And if you wanna sell, sell for more.
OR
Get/install good used 3800, save, and go BOOST.

Thanks guys! The Doc. is in.. Anywho, for starters you can pick up a used 3800-II just about anywhere. Junkyards, ebay, short/long block crates can also be bought @ most auto parts tho you really should shop around for best price. Or bore and stroke the 3800-II you have, then maybe add a little boost to her. Stroker kits are relatively cheap. But you can hit ls1 numbers with stock cubes too.. An eton 90 along with some electronics and hardware from an l67 and some fab work, add a pulley, then you're close to ls1 numbers on stock mannys and exhaust.. Add on some headers, full exhaust, cam and a professional tune and your pretty much there most likely better than ls1 stock numbers.. All with some patiance to find some used stuff, and some new stuff.. New heads are cheap depending on your means, can be had for $400-$600ish for stockers.
It can be done on a budget..
Of coures there's always a little more to things, but if you need help I gotcha covered. If I don't catch one of your questions in a day or 2, just shoot me a pm..
I'm all for the v6 build by the way lol..Last edited by Smittro; 06-22-2010 at 05:58 AM.

Ps, blown factory head gasket, and bad rings are a sign of "over rev" in the 3800-II.. Aswell as a Dexron coolant age problem.. Did you have a SES light prior to the problem? SES light = service engine soon... I have seen 3800's with 130,000ish miles still have some crosshatching in the bores..
