Navy Blue Metallic- 2000 Pontiac Trans Am
gas mileage
i know there is a thread on this but this is a little more serious than what i have read
i have a 2000 trans am with slp airlid, K&N filter, MAC Headers/high flow cats, flowmaster catback, free ram air and new plugs and wires.
I have been getting 13.5-13.9 mpg in the city
i dont ride it hard or anything, as a matter of fact, i have been driving it like a grandma to see how much miles i can get
everyone else's is getting like at least 17 mpg
what the fuck is wrong with mine?
if it matter, i have 115,000 miles on my car.
........and sometimes i smell gas around the car.
please please help because im clueless

You should NEVER smell gas around your car-you need to track down where that is coming from.If you can't you need to get somewhere that can.Just crawl under the back of the car with a flashlight and look for wetness and see if it smells like fuel by rubbing it w/your finger and smelling it.(I know that sounds funny-but this is serious).Any fuel leak can wind up catching your car on fire-not fun!It can be the source of your bad fuel mileage-but that more depends on where you drive. If you only drive a few miles and it's stop and go then it's not unreasonable to get 13 mpg. It's out on the straight hiway stuff that you should be getting more like 30.Averaging the city and hiway (w/emphasis on city and stop and go)will usually net me around 15 -18 mpg average for the tank.

Sounds like to me you might have a gas tank leak. My dad noticed the same thing with his S-10 (smelled gas) we got to snooping around and found that it had small pen head size hole in the tank...amazing so much gas could come out of such a small whole but it did.

Makes me feel a little better just hearing you guys talk of how sucky gas mileage yall are getting. My new Z is averaging around 20MPG and i've been scratching my head over this because the other '99 Z I had would get 23-24MPG just normal driving....and we took it on vacation one year and got 29MPG on the highway!

Damn my car is getting about 17 mpg with all my mods. That is a combo of stop and go and freeway.

OK-he turns the key on and he smells gas(back to topic)-and nobody thinks there is a problem? OKKKKK-I'm thinking there's a fuel leak. It's simple then -turn the key on and look for a leak-might have to get it up in the air. Most places will look at something and give an estimate for free.Doesn't mean they have to fix it-but a fuel leak is dangerous.
