gas gauge, is it linear???
Was just wondering how the gas gauge is setup? Is it linear? I'm at half a tank of gas and was wondering if I'd be able to just divide what it normally takes to fill up by 2 and figure my MPG at this point.
Any input would be helpful!!!

Dont do it like that.
Go to the fuel station. Fill the car completely up..... Then go drive the car as you would for..... o say..... 100 miles..... go back to the fuel station and fill it completely up again.
Divide the number of miles you traveled by the number of gallons you put into your car.
Note : set your trip at zero first time you fill up.
Example.... You fill up with 16 gallons even.... you drive 100 miles..... you go to gas station and fill up again and it take you 4.5 gallons.
100/4.5 is 22.222222222
Your getting 22.2222222 miles a gallon. Got it?

I understand how to do it that way, but I was wondering if there is a way to do it without spending money on gasssss

it'd be tough to do it like you're wanting to do it because it doesn't take much to make a fairly significant impact on your results. The best way to do it is like hi-po said.
Example and these numbers aren't meant to be accurate, just an example of the difference a little bit makes:
You're at a half tank now
Lets say you run it to almost empty and get 150 miles out of it
you divide by half the tank 150/8=18.75mpg
lets say there was actually 8.5 gallons
150/8.5= 17.65
You lost 1.1 mpg just for a half gallon and I'd say going by the gauge you'd be awfully lucky to get within a half gallon of how much is actually in the tank.

I am fairly sure that the gauge is not linear anyways. Seems like the top 1/4 takes alot more to go down then the rest. My 94 was even worse, when the guage would get to "F" (when full it was past) I would be at about 2/3rds of a tank.
Only real way to know your mileage is to drive and check. I use the trip odometer and usually just reset it whenever I get gas.

using the trip meeter is a good idea anyway. I reset every time it could let you know something is wrong if the mileage is way off.
