    Fuel Pump Whine?

hello, recently my 99 z28 has been making a fuel pump whine. it honestly sounds like when someone does a stereo install and has a bad ground, it makes a whining noise that goes up and down with the speed of the motor. only this whine is constant. i know it is in the rear of my car, and have eliminated it possibly being the stereo by shutting it off. i do have a recently replaced fuel filter, as of maybe 2 months ago. but this fuel pump whine just started this week. its not causing problems yet. but im pretty sure it will be on its way out pretty soon. am i correct on this assumption?

I can only hear mine when I turn the key on and it primes - I'd put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see what it reads.

yeah i hear mine all the time now....on startup, on the normal prime up...while driving, and it changes pitch with motor speed too. obviously, to provide more or less fuel to the ellis juan.

I hear mine all the time also. But, just when you listen for it. It sounds kind of like the air pump up front.

it's the bearings in the fuel pump. I would start looking for a replacement although I drove for 2 years with mine whining on and off. It didn't whine all the time but would if it was hot out or if I drove the car a long ways. I knew I was swapping the rear so I just made it last until I got my rear and then changed it out, it was still working when I pulled it 2 years after it started.

ok, i kinda figured it was on its way out with 108,000 on it haha. can officially say the fuel pump will be my biggest problem with the car...honestly the most reliable car i have had ever. i spose ill be switching fuel pumps out this winter when she gets knocked out for the season....and i know the difference between the fuel pump and air pump. my air pump stays on for a good 5 minutes on a cold start up now. and i was curious as to why it stays on so long too. but not that worried about it. my main worry was the fuel pump, ill get her fixed before she goes kerplunk. i hope i could get 2 years outta mine, but all im hoping for is a month for it till the car goes to storage

Listen guys....the whine is bearings (as Orion pointed out).... But why just wait until they go out? Todays fuels are very dry and most have a small amount of alcohol in them nowadays. Go get some Lucas UCL and drop in a oz per 5 gallons of gas. Do that for a few tankfuls and voila. No more whine. No more changing out fuel pumps. Your lubricating the pump guys and cleaning your injectors/top end/combustion chamber. You can also use the same amount of Marvel Mystery Oil to lube your pump. Now get out there and get after it damnit!!!! NAPA sells Lucas UCL ( Upper Cylinder Lube) and everybody and their Mama sells MMO.

    Question Duralube Upper Cylinder Lubricant

Hey Sarge! What about Duralube UCL? I see it in the same 5.25 ounce bottles as Lucas, and they appear similiar. Right now the Duralube is on sale and the Lucas isnt.

Dura Lube is a finely refined oil so yes. That will work.

I just made a thread about this same problem. My TA 98 only has 55k miles on it. Mine sounds like I have a jet engine on the back. I'll try this solution and let you all know . Thanks for the info Sarge.

Doing the MMO treatment on the SS, filled it up, put about 9oz of it in, stopped the whine....Well see as the tank starts to run through....It only starts to make a whine after its dropped 3/8 to 1/2 tank....once filled up seems to go away until that point again.

    Your welcome.
Guys todays fuels suck. No big deal to get a $1.00 plastic bottle and keep a few oz.s of Lucas/FP60/MMO in your car. Put it in every fill up. You will get better MPG and keep your fuel system operating in peak form. Avoid repairs and better MPG wipe out the small cost of the treatment.
