Fuel Gauge goes crazy around 1/4 tank???

where could i start to look to solve this problem:
My fuel gage reads fine until i get to about a quarter tank of gas. Once about this level, no matter cold or warm when i start my car, the needle will either read full tank, under half a tank or not move at all from the off resting position. Has been doing this for the past 4 fill ups. I know it is not me cause i still have been getting the expected mileage out of the full tank of gas.
So is it a bad ground somewhere? sending unit? or what?

    Probably the float....

Just keep 3/8 or more in it. I do that anyways with any vehicle. Never let it get too low.

My old firebird used to do that but, never got it fixed. I totaled it out. No more problem.
