Front disc pad retainers on a 97 TA ??

I am replacing pads / rotors on my son's 97 TA and find there are no pad retainers like I typically see on disc brakes. They are often stainless steel slides with ends to keep the pad in place. Neither side has, pads were riding on the caliper mount? My generic manual shows them but no parts suppliers sell them for this car.

I would greatly appreciate confirmation the retainers are not needed or ever on the car.

    Thank you!
