Fram Extended Guard

As we all know things change. If they didn't we all would still be using Castrol 40 in everything

Frams Orange Can of Death has received well deserved bashing for sometime now. Glued on POS cardboard end caps et al.
A year or so ago Fram released their Extended Guard lineup. It is one of the best filters you can buy. Yes...right up there with Mobil1/K&N/Amsoil....all of them. An excellent filter. Now do not get confused with Fram Tough Guard etc. I am speaking specifically to the Fram Extended Guard.

very nice. how much better than a acdelco pf61e? acdelco doesnt use the sythetic media does it?

I just checked, I have Fram Extra Guard on. The next time I change oil, I'm going to use Fram Extended Guard.

I was never going to install another Fram oil filter again, but it does look like this one has all the right goodies inside.

Because I am at home and feeling lazy, anyone have the part number on this? Do they have a longer truck style one that works like the ACDelco?

I just put one on my vette the last oil change. I usually fo with the K&N cause I like the 1 inch nut on the bottom but hey it was on sale along with Mobile 1.

According to the part number that Blackbird lists, unfortunately it appears that this filter has been consolidated along with the cars and trucks as one application when in fact the truck filters are supposed to be longer.

It's listed as only 3.3" long,,,that's the car filter, but it's grouped in with the trucks too, doesn't make sense

Here is a picture of a "real" truck filter that can also be used on the cars. Easy to see there is a pretty good difference in length, therefore more capacity.

Just look one up for 4.2 trailblazer. The trucks (5.3 and so on) call for the small filter from the service manual. The pf61 actually is for the i6 4.2 and northstar engines

The PF61 is also listed for the 6.0 3/4 ton trucks and such (was a few years ago when I went through all this filter stuff). Which is why I'm puzzled as to why Fram would group this smaller car filter with the same.

I'm thinking it's just cheaper to offer "one size fits all" nowadays for some of these manufactures. That seems to be the theme for almost anything aftermarket anymore.
