    Evap Code

    I keep throwing an evap code. I changed the rubber vacuum lines first with no help. When apart I noticed some charcoal in the purge valve. Does anyone no a way to check the valve, solenoid and the canister? I dont want to just throw parts at it. I am leaning to the canister being the problem.

    Sorry it has been awhile. I have a 0441 code. Also a code came up for manufacturer specific. I think it was 1441.

    Both of those codes indicate the purge solenoid is stuck open. Replacing the purge solenoid should fix the problem.

    Is this for the 96 LT1 Camaro listed in your profile?
    Maybe you have more charcoal bits that found there way up to the solenoid and stuck it open again.

    Yes it is for the lt1. Before I put on the new selonoid I put in a filter before it. It was clogged with charcoal. Only drove 30 or 40 miles. I guess changing the canister should fix it then?

    I don't know if it will work for you, but....

    I was getting an EVAP code on my '96 Fleetwood. The EVAP system is identical (actually, the Cadillac dealer didn't have a correct diagram of the EVAP system - I had to use a Camaro diagram to get a parts listing). Looking at the factory service manual, it looks like the EVAP check is really primitive. There's a sensor (they refer to it as a "switch") just ahead of the vacuum solenoid. The soleniod turns the vacuum on and off as commanded by the PCM. The switch checks for the presence of vacuum or not. There are no other checks.

    Here's my "fix": I disconnected the vacuum line that runs from the switch to the canister and capped it right at the switch. If your solenoid is working properly, the switch will see vacuum or not which will satisfy the PCM. By unhooking the vacuum line that runs to the canister, you've eliminated the detection of any downstream issues.

    It sounds too easy, but doing this cleared my EVAP codes (I don't remember what they were, but I think I had both a P0440 and a P1441).

    In NJ there are no visual emissions checks.

    Cant get rid of this damn code. Still getting the 1441. Is the purge solenoid supposed to be open all the time? After disconnecting the line after the solenoid I could feel vacuum.

    No. the purge should not be open all the time.

    It's normally closed. If you unplug it with the engine running, you shouldn't have vacuum on the other side of it. Sounds like it's faulty again. Maybe stuck open with bits of charcoal.

    You can put 12V to it with the engine off to see if it's working (I suggest engine off so you can hear it operate). If it is 'clicking', I would apply 12V to it and blow it out with compressed air. You'd have better luck clearing it with voltage applied since you won't be fighting the spring that holds the valve shut.

    Well seemed the purge valve was bad again. It would stick open unless I tapped it. Replaced it and all is good. Passed inspection. Thanks for all the help everyone.
