Engine Size

Hello everyone. My name is H. Charles Carr. I'm a new member here and I'm sending you this from Amarillo, TX. I recently purchased a 1968 Pontiac Catalina from a widow here in town. She informed me that the car had a 455 in it, which she said was rare for that make and model. I found a number stamped on the front of the engine block on the passenger side. The number is 101001 with the letters YX underneath. Also on the exhaust manifold are stamped the numbers 9779033. From what I can understand, this engine is either a 400, 428 or as the previous owner said, a 455. Can anyone tell me what exactly do I have?

I don't think the 455 was available in 1968. Here's a good reference site that may help - Spotts Performance/ Pontiac engine ID

Welcome to the site. Don't worry about what engine you have, just enjoy the ride. My wife always told me that size doesn't matter. I guess it's true.

Pontiac did not make a 455 then they came out in 1970-76. If you get under the car it should say on the side of the block. if your lucky it may be a 428 which are very good motors only made i think from 67-69.

YX is a 67 code for a 400 with a Turbo 400 trans. Your 68 could be an early 68 with a 67 block. I found similar codes to your 9779033 but no exact match on the sites I looked up. The similar codes with 977----- were all tied to 400's as well. At least on the site I found the most relevant data on.
