    Dual overhead cam

Alright so this isn't for my LS1 but for my dd. A 97 saturn SL2. Its a 4 cyl dual overhead cam and it's been making a knocking noise for a few months. It runs the same and doesn't overheat, I know I'm an idiot for driving it still but I need help now.

I took off the cover to the internals and found nothing out of what I'd imagine as ordinary for a 130K mile car but I did find that the valleys where the spark plugs go, one of them was a little filled with oil. Could the oil stop the spark in the plug causing one of the cylinders to fail or is there something else wrong.

    Here's some pics

The number 1 spark plug valley is the one that had the most oil
    This is #1

    Number 4 was dry

So obviously I need a new gasket but does anyone else have any ideas on what it could be, i originally thought a rod or lifter but now I feel that that is solid evidence of a problem

Basically the valve cover gasket is leaking oil into the spark plug hole. Its not too terribly uncommon. And yes it can cause a misfire. Misfires don't usually cause a knocking noise so you may have another problem.
