Crate engine or salvage?
Hey folks, just asking a quick question for research purposes. I have an S10 project that I plan on starting soon. Currently I am building the Carputer for it (gps, Radio, Dvd, hands free cell, etc etc) and doing body work to it. Its a 97, with a 4l60e in it. I am planning on using the stock tranny, and may get it reinforced but I heard that the trannys can handle a good amount of power stock. Now to the question:
What would some of ya do? Either buy a crate engine ls1 and just get a nicely built one already ready to go. Or Buy a block, and build it up peice by peice. I was also thinking of finding a junk one and pulling out the components and rebuilding it. i know I will have to buy a new wiring harness and all that jazz but thats another thread lol. This isnt going to be an overnight project, im planning on having the kids help build it too, so im taking my time on it, so just getting opions from fellow gear heads.

I guess the answer to your question lies within your Budget and Ultimate goals. What are they?

Good point. Budget for engine is about 8 grand and looking to have something to take to the track every now and then...or if someone pulls up next to me at a red light lol. Nothing to crazy just something fun. I am actually considering scrapping the S10 as of yesterday, cause my neighbor is wanting to sell me his 93 Camero RS, which is in pretty nice condition for a very good price

Don't rebuild the '93 until you can at least spell "Camaro".

If this is a long term project that involves bonding with kids and them helping, it sounds like something that you want to be heavily involved in every step of the way and something that you can all look at and know you built yourself. In which case I'd either go with a junk yard engine or a short block that you build up (if you have the ability to do that.) and save the extra money for other parts of the car, tools, etc.

Get a SDPC crate LS6 and swap in a badass cam, springs etc.....and you have an easy 415+ rwhp. Then take the remaing 4 grand and build up the tranny, stall it and do the other supporting mods..... You will have a badass screamer.....
