    Coolant Flush

I know we have magical DexCool bullshit in our cars. But, how long does this shit really last? At how many miles is it a good idea to change this crap out?

I read somewhere i cant recall, its a good idea every 60k or 3years. Whichever comes first. It becomes a corrosive liquid once it breaks down. Like said above whatever floats your boat.

I'll change it. Should I flush it with anything other than water?

get it flushed with a proper flushing machine... not very expensive and it will do a way better job

you can do it at home, i know gm makes some coolant flush so you could stop by the dealership and get you a bottle, i'm sure your local parts place has some to tho. how many miles are on it? you might also consider replacing the hoses. good luck

    It has right under 70k.

What's wrong with just a water flush? That's all I have ever done on any car I have owned. . . .The last one went 130k without any cooling system issues.

I think I 'm gonna drain it, run it on straight filtered water for a day or so, drain it, then fill it with DexCool.

that will work, i have done that plenty of times before, the flushing fluid just dissolves the gunk in there where as the water can leave it in there. according to the gm stuff you put straight water in it then add the flush and let it run with the heater on for 30 minustes or so then your done.

Prestone also makes a couple different flush additives that'll remove gunk/rust. One is a leave in for like 600 miles and the other is used like a regular flush...they're like 8 bucks at any parts store.

Exactly, thats what I just had done on mine. Flushing it in the driveway just makes a huge mess, you don't get everything out, and you're flushing it with regular water (not distilled) which has minerals and deposits in it that you don't want in your cooling system.
