car coughs at 110mph
hey guys had my car out today on the interstate, some VW jetta was TRYING to keep up w/me.......anyway i noticed when i got to 110, the z coughed, dropped a few rpm, maybe 50-100 then came back up, then did it again, then i backed down to 90.......any ideas why it did that??
i dont have it up very high often, though last weeked it did the same thing......

Not sure how accurate the speedo is that high - my guess is the car may not have come with Z rated tires and you're hitting the speed limiter? Thinking the non-Z rated cars were limited to something like 112-115? Look at the tire information on the drivers side door.

Yeah it's in the PCM. Limiter is easily removed with programming. If you don't want to buy one a shop can do it.

If I'm not mistaken only the LT1 cars had the limiter w/ non Z rated tires. I am pretty sure my 98' Formy didn't come with Z rated rubber and it pulls well over 112 easily.

08 Mustang GT/CS Blue- 2002 Trans Am WS6 traded
so...i've been 135 or so in my 2002 ws6 several times--so curious-does that mean that the speed limiter has previously been removed, or is there a difference between years, or models???? experienced speed limiter in both pontiacs before this (grand prix's) and never in this car.

Red- 2001 Trans Am WS6 6speed
It depends on the tires your car came with from the factory, some of the Z's and T/A's had a lower speed rated tire so they set the limiter lower on those models. The Z28ss and WS6 came with high speed tires and handling packages so they were able to handle the higher speeds therefore your limiter was set up to cut in untill higher rpms. I ran mine out about a month ago in 4th gear to aprox. 140, the rev limiter kicked in at red line and I shifted into 5th and never did see the rev limiter again cause she was doing all she could do which is 156. But all of them came with rev limiters, not speed limiters.hope this helps.
