Can't put gas in nearly empty fuel tank - spills out neck

I have an 01 Pontiac Firebird Formula. When I went to put gas in it today (the tank was nearly empty), the gas immediately spilled out as if it were over filled. Any ideas as to what could cause this & how I can fix it? Any input will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Clogged fill pipe or maybe your valve at the gas cap is stuck.

sounds like the anti spill check ball in the filler neck (tank end) is stuck. It's designed to shut off flow out of the filler neck in the event of a rollover.

If that is the issue, what can be done to fix the problem?

Find a long enough and narrow rod like a coat hanger stretched out that you can try to push the check ball back open. Otherwise it will mean going into the tank.

If you have to go in you can either drop the tank or do the access door panel mod (be careful when doing this). I've done both ways in getting to the tank, the trap door mod is by far my favorite.

Trap door mod looks very interesting, but what smws6ta said, be careful.
