Why not repair the seat while in the car?

What area of the seat is coming apart? You might need a curved needle for some extra clearance to sew. If anything, I am tempted to say the hinges are bolted to the floorboard. Try folding the rear seats down to see if you find the hinges.

Good idea. I don't imagine it should cost too much.

Not a bad idea to let a pro go at it. Upholstery stuff can be tricky and it pays to have the end result look right.

I asked about reupholstering my seats and the shop told me something similar. But they said that just taking off the leather pieces would require new ones, since they cannot sew through the same holes as the original. The shop ought to be able to get the factory color and sew it on. It should look just like new. I had to replace my convertible top a couple years ago (at an upholstery shop). When I got it back, the car looked like a brand new ride.

For the amount of leather you're looking at with the back seat, I'd guess it's be getting close to $1000, including materials.
