The air pump is used for emissions. If you remove it then you will have a service engine soon light come on, unless you have it tuned out.
To remove it from the car is not that hard, you can access it from the drivers side access panel just in front of the tire on the bottom of the car. You will also need to plug the hole in your lid for the hose that runs from the lid to the air pump.

Takes about 15 minutes and its a lot of 10mm bolts. Use a master cylinder cap seal (from that wall at autozone. its a dodge product) to seal up the air lid.. or get fabricating with plastic

I don't see it being able to do that. All the AIR system does is introduce fresh air into the exhaust. First checks I would do for the misfire is check coils, wires, and plugs. If you are lucky then you will have a SES code pop up which if you are really lucky find out if it is just one cylinder with a misfire, or if it is a random misfire.

Probably not. Mine wasnt working nor my EGR and it ran fine. What kind of backfiring are you having? Show some codes if you have any

if your pump was running constant the front O2's would see that as a lean condition and would dump a bunch of fuel in there. Is the pump running all the time? Just pull the fuse and relay if you wanted to check and see if that's what it is.

my car threw a code for the secondary air pump that is why i thought that would be causing my problem but to find out i had a crack in my header right where my breather tube comes off the header at the end i got it welded and the backfiring went away. my air pump definatly does not work, would that cause the car to buck just a little bit? after the header was welded the backfiring was gone and it ran alot smoother but it still has a little bit of bucking not much like it did before but there is definatly still a problem there.
