AC Belt chirp & ON/oFF issue
98 camaro z28
When I turn on my air conditioning, the belt squeaks and the ac pump turns on and off. It throws off my idle while in drive about 300 rpms +/- each time it clicks itself "On/Off". It's really annoying. It still blows cool air, but probably not for long. I've put sealant, UV leak detection agent, and r-134a refrigerant into the system. Should I take it to a local AC shop? Or do I just not put enough r-134a in each time? How much refrigerant does the ls1 take? I've heard that if you don't put in enough, it will just leak its self back out again. Or do I have a bigger problem? The ac belt was just replaced at my last visit to the mechanic for replacing steering rack. It was shredded into two separate belts, down the center of the belt.Last edited by eautocad; 10-26-2007 at 04:47 PM.

It could be a couple of things:
Bad pulley
Bad tensioner
AC Compressor seizing
AC Leaking refrigerant with a combination of one of the above
If you have tools and some know how, it is not that bad to do your self.

would you say it would be a safe bet to say I need a new compressor?

yeah no kidding, I hate ac problems... We had a 97 cavalier that needed the entire system replaced.. Should I get a better a/c system than factory b/c of my upgrades?
How much r134a should I use?Last edited by eautocad; 10-27-2007 at 12:13 PM.

well an ac guy told me once that if you dont fill it up all the way it will loose pressure. I only have been using one can for each refill, I think that may be my issue. I hope. Thanks for the input!!! You rock!

Thank you everyone for help. The resolution is near at hand.
whelp, i took it in today at 3 and had "Ice cold air" a widely used Tampa air conditioning service. They have commercials on bright house non-stop, so I figure I might as well try them out. Free estimates, free leak detection, perfect.
I have a leak in my compressor. On top of that, my condenser needs replaced b/c it comes with the compressor. I was also informed that using stop leak products just pretty much gunk up the system other than fixing one specific issue with a valve to do with emissions or something to that nature. Because I used the stop leak for my problem which was not the valve issue, I need to have my stem flushed to get the sealant out of it. The last time the ac was serviced was at 33k 10/20/2000, so I guess its time for a new one. The vehicle was stock until 66,387. So thats 30k with oem and 30k with modified. The vehicle since 66,387 miles has eaten two transmissions that were to oem hp spec. My transmission needs beefed up, so does my a/c system as well?
So for $769 I get:
New re manufactured air compressor
new condenser
system flush
top off r134a and install labor
12 month warranty
Is this a good deal? Or will my after market tuning and parts just blow this one too? If it will blow it, what would be a good after market compressor that will be able to handle what I throw at it?
My Setup
470crank-362rwhp from
224-581 comp cam & valve train
mid length headers
Carbon Fiber lid
K&N intake
Free Mods (Ram Air, EGR, Ported Throttle body&Intake Manifold)
3400 stall
Max Energy
MSD Wires
