98 Z28 leaks

My Camaro is leaking from the rear axle, from what looks like where the axle tube goes into the differential housing. And from either the oil pan, opposite from the drain plug, or above it. I'm almost certain it's just above it though. for the axle, How can this one be fixed? For the oil pan, what could this be, IF NOT the oil pan gasket itself?

From what you are describing, your axle seal is leaking. You will either need to put the car on a lift, or the rearend on jackstands and remove the differential cover to drain the differential.

Remove wheel from leaking axle.
Remove brake caliper bolts and rotor from said axle.
Remove C-clip from exposed differential of leaking axle.
Remove axle exposing leaky seal and remove.
Disconnect parking brake from axle along with backing plate.
You will need a small hammer and a seal remover.
Replace leaky seal with NEW seal and LIGHTLY tap into axle tube until it sits flush. DO NOT CRUSH THE SEAL.
Reinstall axle, brake rotor, caliper, then C-clip. Refill axle with fresh gear oil specified by owner's manual.

As for the oil leak, there is an area above the oil filter that is prone to leaking. I can't remember what it's called, but other members will tell you what it is and if I have missed any steps.

The axle seal is good, i replaced them not too long ago.

The axle tubes can occasionally leak on cars. Best bet for an easy fix would be to clean it real well -- using spray brake cleaner is probably the best, just be careful you don't get it in your eyes. Then apply either an epoxy or adhesive sealant around the entire perimeter of the axle tube where it attaches to the center section. Not a guaranteed fix, but will most likely remedy the leak if you do a good job.

The oil pan gasket can leak -- I just replaced ours last weekend. I thought it was a weeping rear main at first but found that to be totally dry. There is also a fitting above the oil filter that is the provision for a factory installed oil cooler. This may also leak over time. I've never seen a rearend leak from that spot. This is a first.

I have seen it on a few cars... probably first time on an F-body though. Our Monte SS has an axle tube weeping that I need to address.

maybe some black RTV?

Certainly worth a try. Hit it with a small wire brush and brake cleaner and then dry it off with compressed air. Nice thing about RTV is that you can use your finger to force it into the gap and make a nice smooth bead.

I get it. lol. love the stuff. theres also that permatex rubber sealant, i use it like glue. gets rock hard, fixes almost anything.

So upon re inspection. it looks like the rear is leaking from the top, pass. side. the driver side was dry. it's hard to aim a phone in there for pictures. lol

Was the car ever hit from behind? This is weird. Unless the rear is leaking from the vent.

not that i know of, clean record. the rear was out of another car. it started leaking after the last gear install. doesnt look like its even seeping out of the pinion.

Tubes typically are pressed into the differential housing, wonder if either had a burr during manufacturing. Honestly besides the rtv or spot welding, there's nothing you can do IMO.

Mines leaking from there too.


I hope by the end of summer this will be a forgotten memory. (side project that I'm not ready to post about yet)

Spray that side with brakleen and go over it with the RTV then.

Are your axle seals starting to weep too?

I had an old chevy pickup that the differential vent had become clogged shut and it began to leak from the base of the axle tube,

it also began to weep from the axle seal too.

I have heard of axle hop causing this sort of leak as well as curb shots.

That's where it looks like it's coming from..im looking at a stock 10bolt though.. 300$. My 3.73s whine a little anyway.
