4.8l/5.3l swap in my 1998 ta??

i was wondering if anybody out there has ever swapped a 5.7 LS1 motor with a 4.8L or a 5.3L truck motor?i have a 1998 trans am with the LS1 5.7,6 spd,the aluminum block and heads are ruined, and it's costing me $2800 for another motor.i can buy a 4.8L or a 5.3L from a friend for around $500.i know its probably not a smart thing to do but it would save me over $2000.i also have the LG G5X1 cam that i would be changing, the LS7 roller lifters,LS2 timing chain, the comp cam hardened push rods and headers.any info would be greatly appreciated

Alot of people have done it already (on the other board). I'm installing a 5.3 in my 00' TA and putting a turbo on it.

If you plan on adding boost down the road, go with the 5.3. If you drop a set of stock 6.0 heads on them the compression drops to 8.6:1. Plenty of guys pushing 550 rwhp with these 5.3's all day long.

The LQ4 6.0 already has the 317 heads and the compression is 9.4:1. The LQ9 6.0 also already has the 317 heads but has flat top pistons so the compression is 10:1. The 5.3 will handle the boost alot better because of being able to drop the compression to a very friendly 8.6:1 by adding the 317 heads. Your cam will work fine on the stock 4.8 or 5.3. Just make sure you upgrade the valvetrain accordingly.

You already have most of the parts you should upgrade (lifters, hardened pushrods, etc.). The only thing I didn't see listed was upgraded valvesprings. If you go with the 6.0, I would try and sell the 317 heads and get a set of 243 heads. They'll bump your compression about a point. With that setup and a decent intake, you should be good to go.

My friend went to a 6.0 when his LS1 died from too much boost and it was alot cheaper than fixing up the LS1.
BTW ditch the 98 LS1 ECM and switch to a 99 and up ecm the tuning is much easier, just ask my guy he curses my car. He said the 99's are simpler to mod and tune for certain items. Said some are the same.

The only issue you may run into with the LQ4 is it's a bit heavier....if your lowered, you may have to swap back to stock springs. An LQ4 with a cam and 243 heads is a very stout combo. Installing will be exactly the same as installing an ls1.....you would just swap accessories. The 1998 is not a bad PCM...there are plenty of guys running wild setups with them, it's just slower than the 99-02 PCM's. If you can get a good LQ4 for a good price, jump on it.

dont know what i'd do without you..lol.so even though its a 2005,its still the same block?i can get the 6.0 for $1400 can,or buy an ls1 for $2500.or i can buy a 5.3 for $600.i'd go with the 5.3 but if i can get more power with the 6.0 for $900 more, might be worth it??and a better motor??
