MAF issue will cause a stumble in the rev range. Our car had a modified MAF when we purchased it and the symptoms were exactly as you described.

Easiest test in the world -- unplug it. With the engine off, simply unplug the harness connector and then start the car. This forces the PCM into speed density mode. Rather than utilizing airflow measured by the MAF, the PCM estimates airflow utilizing readings from the air temperature and MAP sensors. If the engine now revs and runs smooth the MAF is likely the issue. If the problem persists, you have ruled out the MAF as the problem. Note that this test will trigger the SES and you will need to reset it. Running the engine with the MAF disconnected does no harm but is not a solution to the issue.

How about a vacuum leak? Bad or loose plug wire? A shake is generally the visual indication of a misfire.
