    2002 Camaro ls1 vs ls6 block

So apparently a few 2002 camaro's got the ls6 block instead of the ls1 block due to GM surplus... Obviously there is no real difference in sizes between the blocks other than the bottom end.. i guess the ls6 came with better crank ventalation and is a little stonger under high RPM's.

Im just wondering if anyone knows how to tell the difference between the two blocks without literally taking appart the bottom end. does anyone know the ls1 / ls6 block casting numbers and are there any of the obvious signs that its would be an ls6 block.

ive heard that the ls6 block is slightly darker block when viewed, wether this is true or not im not quite sure.

    any help would be great

Supposedly 10-15% of the '01 and 25% of the '02 cars got the LS6 block. Get an inspection mirror and flashlight and look for casting number 12561168 for the LS6 on the drivers side deck above the trans flange. You can also look for a "bullseye" stamped near the thermostat, the LS1 has it - LS6 doesn't.

yeah thats the only way to tell is by the casting number. unfortunately they have no power gains over the LS1 as far as the fbody goes.

When ripping apart my upper end for my H/C combo going in, I found that I have a LS6 block . If you do a search you can find some good info
