2002 5.3L Conversion into a 1986 Pickup
Hello All,
I am doing a conversion of a 2002 5.3L Tahoe motor, into a 1986 chevy pickup. I had the motor running on an engine stand at idle, and then I got it in the truck. Once in the truck it would start up consistently and idle great. All in open loop. And then I decided to take it around the block. I did not have any O2 sensors at the time, and the camshaft position sensor was not working. As I limped it back on about 4 cylinders it died, and has never ran consistently in open loop again. My goal is to get back to where I started.
I have checked the following things:
Fuel Pressue = 60psi at the fuel rail
Compression = Above 150psi
All the grounds have been checked out.
I hooked a timing light up to one of the spark plug wires and I cranked the motor over, with the fuel pump disabled. I was getting a spark at a consistent frequency until the fourth cycle of the motor. I am wondering if this is pointing to the crankshaft position sensor.
I have reached a stand still and I am wondering if I have my grounds right, or possibly the wiring wrong.
Need help,

Sounds like that positon sensor... I had a 98 GMC Sierra w/ 5.0L 305 and about 103,000 miles the sensor went out... needless to say the same thing happened to me, the truck died right in the middle of traffic, besides the point. I replaced the sensor(cheap replacement from autozone about 40 bucks I think) , made sure that the connector was making a clean contact with the sensor (sprayed wd-40 to loosen up old dirt and grim etc., wiped clean, then connected), ran great ever since (had to clear the DTC though). Hope that helps... good luck..!
P.S. get all of those stupid sensors hooked up... it seems to piss the computer off when you dont.... we all know what happens when you piss the pcm off...Last edited by wzup1000; 02-09-2006 at 07:58 PM.
