    Unhappy Built LS1 350z build

    Good Afternoon Everyone!!

I'm planning on driving down to Louisville tomorrow to look at a LS 5.3 LS1 (THB I dont know squat about LS motor; Leaving the Honda scene world) out of a 2012 GM pickup. It has 132K miles on it. I was wonder what I should be on the look out for? I think the motor is cheap for what the guy is asking for it. The plan is if I get the motor I want to tear it down; rods, crank, pistons, bored out, heads etc. If I'm going that far with it; is it still necessary to go over it to make sure its all good? LS NOOB------>ME

    Thanks & Happy Holidays everyone!!

    Greetings!

First question - is it a DOD (displacement on demand) motor? If so, it has a hydraulic circuit that can deactivate 4 out of the 8 pistons by shutting off the valves. Next - does it come with the PCM and wire harness, or are you going aftermarket? Always best to get the PCM and full engine harness if you can. Next - is it aluminum or cast iron? You are generally allowed a cleanup of .005" on an aluminum block... max.

These engines are quite durable and if properly maintained may need no work. Dip the oil to inspect its condition, look into the cooling passages to see if there is excessive scale and buildup, scope the cylinders (if you can), and roll it over by hand to ensure that it turns free (plugs removed). LS engines are now a dime a dozen having been in production for over 20 years, so pass if you find any issues.
