Launching and shifting
Just curious what a stock Z28 should be launching and redlining at. I used to do right at 6 grand but something doesnt feel right. What have you successful draggers done?

I launched at 2,000. I usually shifted at 5850-5900. Kinda seemed like it died out after 5500 but i wanted the power for the next gear so i took it higher. All depends on your mods and track/traction issue.

Does anyone take it to 6k?

Unless you have your powerband setup to go to 6+ there is no reason to. Say if you had cam and or/head package it would make sense but from factory all the power is a little lower.

Isnt 6k the redline? So I should take it to around 5500-5800?

Well 5800rpm is the shutoff, i had mine chipped. For a stock car you need to take it around the redline, for a modded car the powerband always increases unless you mod specially for low rpm power.
But the ls1 does better at higher rpm modded than low rpm. No reason to take anything larger than a 302 ford motor and try to make low rpm power unless you have a larger block motor. Say for instance a 454. Big blocks usually respond to lower rpm power.
Shift at redline unless you have any internal work done/or dyno tuned.
Noted: That on BONE STOCK ls1s m6, its usually better to shift a little below redline for powerband/next gear torque. Plus you dont wanna bounce off the rev limiter...Last edited by InEEdSPEED; 08-27-2008 at 09:47 PM.

I shift right before the rev limiter kicks in. The factory tach sucks so I just learned the proper sound and feel to shift at.

Blue- 2002 Z28 Camaro M6
Before I had the cam I would shift right a 6K, and usually launch about 2700. With the new cam and tune I tend to shift around 6500-6700 and launch about the same since I am on street tires with a 10 bolt still.
Once the 9" is in I plan on trying for at least launching from 5000 but it all depends on traction. I will even try higher, but I am not sure that will hook at all. Launching from 6000 with anything other then really sticky tires and a built rear seems like it will cause one of two things to happen. 1, Spin an lot or 2, hook up and break the rear end (maybe not the first time, but eventually it will).

Well man i have no idea. I took it to the shop and asked them if they could take the speed limiter off and boost the rev limiter (for futher mods), and they said they could chip it.
Im pretty sure they flashed/programmed it or some shit but what the hell, didnt cost much anyway.
