Stock 16x8 rims on my t/a..

My question is, what is the widest tire I can sit on that rim, and still be safe? Also I want a staggered look so what size would I throw in the front??

255 is the widest that you should put on a 8" rim without having bulging sidewalls. Wider than that and you risk the seal blowing out from an impact like a pothole. If you want to stagger widths, save up for 17's but note there is a healthy jump in price between good 16 and 17" tires.

I was running 245/50/R 16's on those rims.

255's I think are as big as you can get.

yes, I ran 255/50R16 on my '87 TA (16x8" rims) for years and they worked great, didn't wear out unevenly and actually saved my ass once when I hit an ice patch and side swiped a median, wider tire took the entire hit, never even scratched the rim, just scuff marks on the tire that washed off.

Kuhmo makes 265's for 16x8 wheels. The 265/45-16 was designed by Kumho for the 8" wheel - to be legal for SCCA American Sedan rules.
The "optimal" wheel width for the 265/45-16 is 9.5" -
but it works very well even on an 8" wheel as it was
    designed to do.
I use the Ecsta XS's on my car. They are a summer tire. The other Kumho's in this size are pretty much just race tires.

Just put a sent of Firestone Firehawk SZ50 P255/50R16's on the rear of my Formula and they fit perfectly. The sidewall looks normal and doesn't bulge out at all. They only look marginally bigger than the Kumho 245/50r16's I had on there. They are pretty hard to find but sticky as hell!
