    Sidewall height? HELP!

Ok, choosing between 275/40/18 or 275/35/18... What's the actual difference in the sidewall height (from the top of the rim to the tread) between the two? Would the 40 series be more advantage in traction or will they be the same? Got new wheels, just trying to put decent tires on that will actually have some bite. I can get BFG Sports for 50 bucks less each tire if I go with the 40 series...I pulled a 1.90 60 ft on some cooper Zeon's. Would the BFG's offer the same?

    Question

    275/35/18s around 25.66" tall *

    275/40/18s around 26.66" tall

So a little over 1/2" taller sidewalls with the 275/40/18s

I've got both on my car:

Nice ride. You have the 275/35 in the front and the 40's in the rear? Do you think the 40's would provide greater traction than the lower profile? What is that BFG's Sports? If so, have you ever raced them and what kind of 60 ft. times did you have? I have Nitto DR's now but they suck camel cock. lol

Besides the already mentioned height difference remember that the 35's will be wider then the 40's.

    Yes, and no.

That depends on the tire manufacture, and the wheel width used to obtain their tire measurements.

    Lightbulb

The tires are Falken 452s , and I choose 40s for the rear because of the lower price for the 275/40/18s ,and I wanted a staggered tire height.

I don't race the car , so I can't really help you with your other questions.

no, not true. it depends on the tire. within the same manufacturer a 275/40 and a 275/30 are the exact same width.

    275/40/17 = 275mm tire width/ 40% of tire width for sidewall/ 17" rim size

basically its 5% taller, so no, there will be no real performance difference, its all appearance.

a 275/35/18 will be the same overall diameter as the stock size. go with that if your concerned with any discrepancies.

275 is the width bead to bead 35 and 40 is the percentage of the width used on the sidewall so with 40% being uesed vs 35% the tire tread width will be different. I never said it was alot just that it would be different.
Besides since going with a staggered tire combination eliminates rotating anyway why not go with a 285/35 ? JMO

Thanks for the info everyone. I ended up going with the 35 series. Cooper Zeon 2XS. Good looking tire & have had good experience with them before. Would like to have gotten the KDW's, but I couldn't see spending a grand on tires that would only last 15,000 miles. Just hope I made the right decision...lol
