Breaks: How low is too low?

My breaks still have 3mm left. As long as break pads don't get worn down all the way it should be okay. I can wait until it gets down to about 2 or 1mm right?

    thx,
    P

I would say time for new pads. Being able to stop isn't something I would mess around with.

Time for new pads (at least) and maybe rotors <---check them while you are at it.
